My name is Miriam Rock and I am a native Philadelphian, returned to my favorite city after a brief sojourn in New Haven.
I grew up in West Mount Airy and attended The Miquon School, an incredible, private, progressive elementary school set on ten acres which inspired in me a love of learning, life and discovery. I graduated from Miquon in 2004 and then went to Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy (then Akiba Hebrew Academy), a pluralistic Jewish day school, for middle and high school. In the middle, I spent three years (from ages 3-5 and again for 8th grade) living in Jerusalem and attending Israeli public schools. I graduated from high school in 2010 and entered Yale University, where I was a member of Trumbull College. At Yale, I majored in English, eventually graduating with distinction in 2014.
I have known for a long time that I wanted to spend my life as an educator. At some point during my junior year, as I tutored students at CO-OP, a wonderful arts magnet school in New Haven, I realized that my passion lay in teaching High School English. I thought about a variety of programs to help me to begin my teaching career before finally deciding to apply to Penn GSE's Teacher Education Program. I chose this program for several reasons. First of all, it is a condensed program, enabling me, within ten months, to become certified and earn an M.S.Ed. Additionally, Penn TEP foregrounds field experience. I have spent a full year student teaching at a wonderful magnet school in South Philadelphia, teaching two junior and one senior English class. Finally, the program's focus on Teacher Research gave me the opportunity to pursue a project that I was passionate about, namely, the one catalogued on this site!
When I am not pursuing numerous academic adventures, I am an avid biker, experimental chef and lover of reality television competition shows.
